Interview about Urban Terror 4.2
Everyone's waiting for Urban Terror 4.2 - In this News we have an Interview with Raedwulf for you plus some Screenshots of the upcoming Urban Terror 4.2.
You're a new Developer at Frozen Sand and not everybody knows you yet, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your work with Frozen Sand?

I am a University of York student in the second year - living in, guess what, York. Essentially, I'm an avid programmer and its hard to find me away from a computer long. I've been programming since I was about 11-12 so I've been churning code for quite a while. My main experience that is related to urbanterror is working with the Irrlicht developers for their VBO implementation and the Eastfront MOD for Enemy Territory. I joined Frozen Sand when woekele noticed that I was working on bringing XreaL support to urbanterror - ie. backporting XreaL. Although that failed (at that time), woekele offered a position to join FS development team as 27 was busy with other tasks. I was given the position of lead programmer (there weren't any other programmers (27 excluded)).

Half the Community can't wait for Urban Terror 4.2, a lot of people, forums and communities wrote about it - But what exactly will Urban Terror 4.2 be? (Bugfix release? New features? New maps and game engine modifications?)

We haven't decided fully. Initially it was just going to be a bugfix, but things got delayed, and lots of things were developed during that delay. So, 4.2 would end up to probably have the new engine, new maps - 3 of which support 27's new enhancements. The gameplay will have jump game mode (but that is still a big TODO on the list because its missing some features) and there's LastMan Standing.

VBO is a good point also, TwentySeven modified some stuff, now we will have vbo, depth of field, nicer water and what else? Do you think the gameplay will be different because of the more detailed and nicer looking game? How about FPS you think turning everything on will work on old computers?

Gameplay wont be different for at least 4.2 I cannot say if it will be for versions after that, as we've not really started on them. FPS should be better, if graphics cards support VBO, the rest can be turned on and off. Fog is what its called - maybe, I've not tried it yet. It will be possible to turn it off as well. If I remember correctly, fog should be available currently, just maps don't use it often. The new fog just looks better. As everything is customisable, if the new features make it harder to see, they can always be turned off

I see, any new staff near to depth of field, fog, vbo which will be added?

specular lighting, bumpmapping etc. They are already added, thats the shiny walls - seen in some of the screenshots. I have yet to play on iobumpy actually - so I'm as aware as you about it - I'm a Linux user. I'll be porting iobumpy to linux this evening. After I finish my changes to the client - which includes VoIP support and lots of new commands.

I guess, the most interesting question is, when will Urban Terror 4.2 finally be out, even if you can't hear that question anymore.... Any idea?

Well, I'd like to see it soon definitely. It really depends if things are stable - because some things aren't fully tested.

Jump game mode - for one, the new client I'm working on - some special things (let me get permission whether I can leak the news (two sec), flash grenades. yes flash grenades ;) We need to test the balance on flash grenades, because gameplay hasn't seen their use for a long long time. UAA with anticheat is set for 4.2. Once the windows build is complete for the anticheat, we will need to port it to Linux/Mac (Don't worry about this, it will be done - UAA devs (Kalish and RaideR) use Mac, and Hobbes and I are Linux guys).

Haha. Flash grenades are definitely a thing, i'd like to have in the game. And i guess a lot of guys in the community think the same. As talking about the Community: A few people in the Community wanted to know, will there be new weapons? I for example would like to have the P-90. Another question regarding the current weapons, will they be more balanced or modified, like recoil, damage, spray, etc?

I can say that the P-90 model and animations are done, but we are still having issues to tag it correctly for Quake3 (i.e. Q3 model format). So its unlikely to come before 4.3. And there is also the issue for balance.

I would remove hk69 and negev :-P

I've not been told to do anything with the negev and hk69, but I'd weaken the sr8 severely :D. Of course none of that will happen :P. The SPAS12 is improved a lot in 4.2 - it is actually usable - but maybe too powerful.

Whats the most interesting new feature in your opinion for Urban Terror 4.2?

Interesting feature, hard one, there's a lot of features - I think it should be taken as a whole. The thing that would jump out would be the graphics.

I guess you followed the new ioquake3 version - What does this mean for Urban Terror Users? Will we have VOIP? Can we frag with self-made 3d glasses like sometimes found on cornflakes packages?

VoIP yes, I've been testing that and it works. Perhaps I need some admin features associated with it though. I haven't had time to add those in yet. You are right about the Anaglyph mode (for 3d glasses), I was testing it yesterday. It works fine with urbanterror (after a bug fix). Although it made me nauseous as I didn't have 3d-glasses. :P

Come on, Tell us some more Secrets! Will we get laserswords?

We want a good Anti-cheat not stupid water effect. Punkbuster or Aequitas.
more power in SPAS? lol! like in 4.0 where a newplayer can kill u with 2 shots aiming ur legs -_-

Quote for anticheat (necessary), but also graphical and net engine got their own importance. Cheater, cheat and bot will got an harder life but will continue to exist, forever and ever, regardless of anticheat, UAA, whiping menaces, threatening letters or horse heads put in their beds (Godfather docet). I think that a sane improvements to gaming features and aesthetics are basilar to maintain people interest alive and avoid a massive players "departure" from the game.

For the Katana dont know whether it was just a joke, we will see, haha.

Anticheat is beeing worked on - Theres another Interview (UAA Passport System) with a link to their Newsletter, there they're writing a bit about AntiCheat. Also VDAC is around, soon, too. However, we shouldn't forget, better/nicer graphics will bring us newer and more interested players. I think both was needed.
